Should I take IELTS or TOEFL?

Short answer

Both are accepted almost everywhere, so pick the format that suits you: IELTS has a face-to-face speaking test and handwriting option, while TOEFL is fully computer-based with a headset-recorded speaking section.

If you speak more naturally to a person than to a microphone, IELTS Academic is usually the easier score to earn. If you type fast and prefer predictable, template-friendly tasks, TOEFL iBT tends to suit you better.

Check the specific universities on your shortlist before booking. A small number of programmes and some visa routes list only one of the two, and that decision is made for you.

Cost and availability differ by city. Book at least four weeks ahead in peak season (April–August), because slots near application deadlines disappear first.
