What IELTS score do I need for a masters abroad?
Short answer
Most masters programmes ask for IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Competitive universities in the UK and USA often want 7.0, while many programmes in Canada, Australia and Germany accept 6.0–6.5.
The overall score matters less than the band minimums. A 6.5 overall with a 5.5 in writing is usually rejected, because almost every university sets a floor for each of the four sections. Plan to clear 6.0 in every band even if the advertised requirement is only an overall figure.
Law, journalism, teaching, nursing and other regulated or writing-heavy courses commonly ask for 7.0 with 6.5 in each band. Engineering, computing and management courses are typically the most flexible.
If you are just short, many universities offer a pre-sessional English course of 6–12 weeks that converts a 6.0 into a conditional-offer route. It costs money and time, so retaking the test once is usually cheaper.
