Conversions use the official tables (ETS TOEFL/IELTS comparison, ETS 1-6 band comparison, Pearson's July 2025 PTE concordance and Duolingo's IELTS concordance). A score counts for a band only once it clears that band's published minimum, so results are deliberately conservative. Each university sets its own accepted tests and minimum section scores.
Common questions
What TOEFL score equals IELTS 6.5?
On the official comparison tables, IELTS 6.5 starts at TOEFL iBT 79 (about 4.0 on the 1-6 scale TOEFL introduced in January 2026), PTE Academic 55 and Duolingo 105. That band is the usual entry requirement for masters programmes in the UK, USA and Ireland.
How does the new TOEFL 1-6 score compare with the old 0-120 score?
Since 21 January 2026 TOEFL iBT reports a 1-6 band. ETS publishes a comparison: 6 starts at 114, 5.5 at 107, 5 at 95, 4.5 at 86 and 4 at 72 on the old scale. Many universities still list 0-120 requirements during the transition, so check which scale your programme quotes.
Is Duolingo accepted instead of IELTS?
Many universities in the USA, Canada and Europe accept the Duolingo English Test, but several visa routes still require IELTS or TOEFL. Confirm both the university and the visa requirement before booking.
Which English test is easiest to score well on?
Scores are designed to be comparable, so no test is genuinely easier. Students who type quickly often prefer TOEFL or PTE, while those who prefer speaking to a person prefer IELTS.
Do universities look at overall or section scores?
Both. Most ask for an overall score plus a minimum in each section, commonly IELTS 6.0 in every band. Meeting the overall score alone is not always enough.
