Is the GRE still required for masters admissions?
Short answer
Many US and European programmes are now GRE-optional, but a strong score (315+) still helps for funding, top-20 computer science and engineering programmes, and for applicants with a lower GPA.
GRE-optional does not mean GRE-ignored. When two applicants look similar, a good quantitative score is an easy tiebreaker, and several assistantship and fellowship committees still ask for it.
Skip the GRE if your target universities have dropped it and your GPA is strong. Take it if your GPA is below a 3.0 equivalent, if you are switching fields, or if you are applying for funded research positions.
Aim for a balanced score. For engineering and computing, quant 165+ matters most; for management and social sciences, verbal and analytical writing carry more weight.
