How many universities should I apply to?
Short answer
Six to eight is the sweet spot: two reach, three or four match and two safe universities. Fewer risks a blank season, more usually means weaker, recycled applications.
Split by realistic chance, not by ranking. A reach is a university where your profile sits below the typical admit, a match is where you are right in line, and a safe is one where you are clearly above the bar.
Every application should have a statement of purpose written for that programme. Reviewers spot a generic SOP instantly, and it is the single most common reason strong profiles get rejected.
Factor in application fees. At ₹5,000–9,000 each, ten applications is a real cost — money that is often better spent on one retake of a test score.
