Visas

How much money do I need to show for a student visa?

Short answer

Most countries want one year of tuition plus one year of living costs, held for a set period before you apply — 28 days for the UK, a blocked account for Germany, and a GIC plus tuition for Canada's fast-track route.

The holding period matters as much as the amount. UK caseworkers reject applications where the balance dipped below the required figure at any point in the 28-day window, even if the final balance is correct.

Loan sanction letters, education loans from recognised lenders and sponsor affidavits are accepted in most countries, but the acceptable sponsor list is narrow — usually parents, grandparents or a spouse.

Keep the paper trail clean. Large unexplained deposits shortly before applying are the most common reason funds are questioned.
